Piping systems in industrial, power, and process facilities are subjected to forces that go far beyond simply containing pressure: thermal expansion, weight, wind and seismic loading, equipment nozzle loads, and dynamic events like water hammer or relief valve discharge all place stress on pipe, supports, and connected equipment. ICPE performs detailed pipe stress analysis to verify that piping systems can safely accommodate these loads throughout their operating life, without overstressing the pipe itself, damaging connected equipment, or exceeding the allowable loads on critical nozzles and supports.
Analysis is performed in accordance with applicable piping codes, including ASME B31.1 for power piping and ASME B31.3 for process piping, with particular attention to high energy piping systems: steam, hot water, and other lines operating at elevated temperature and pressure, where the consequences of an undersized support or an unaccounted-for thermal expansion loop can be severe. ICPE evaluates flexibility, support placement and type, and expansion joint requirements to ensure each system performs reliably across its full range of operating and transient conditions, from startup and shutdown to normal operation and upset events.
Because pipe stress issues are far more expensive to correct in the field than on paper, ICPE integrates stress analysis early into the design process, coordinating closely with structural, mechanical, and process teams to resolve support conflicts, nozzle loading concerns, and routing constraints before construction begins.
